Gravel & Crushed Stone — Driveways, Drainage & Base Materials

Both are clean crushed stone. #67 is slightly smaller (¾") and more uniform — better for concrete mixes and tighter drainage. #57 ranges ¾"–1" and is the most common driveway top and general-purpose drainage stone.

Use road base (or crushed concrete road base) as the structural compacted layer underneath, then top with #57 stone for the wearing surface. Heavy vehicles need both layers; light residential use can sometimes get away with road base alone.

No. Pea gravel and other clean stones (#57, #67, #89) are washed free of fines, so they stay loose and let water through. If you need a hard, level surface, choose a material with fines (stone dust, road base).

A residential driveway should have 4–6 inches of compacted road base, plus 2–3 inches of #57 top stone. Heavy traffic or soft soils may need a deeper base.

Clean angular stone — #57 or pea gravel (#89) — around the perforated pipe. Avoid fines because they clog the pipe over time.
