Frequently Asked Questions

Apply 2–4 inches of mulch over landscape beds. Less than 2 inches doesn't suppress weeds; more than 4 can starve roots of air and water.

A cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep. Use our calculator for an exact estimate based on your area.

Quality dyed mulches use iron oxide (red/brown) or carbon (black) — both are plant- and pet-safe. Avoid mulch made from treated lumber, which is sometimes sold as low-cost colored mulch.

Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) is processed to meet ASTM F1292/F2075 standards for impact attenuation and is required for accessible play surfaces. Standard wood-chip mulch doesn't meet those standards.

Pine bark nuggets break down slowly — typically 2–3 years before they need topping off, longer than shredded mulches.
