Material was spec-true, no surprises. That matters when I'm bidding tight. Wegravel has become my default for residential drops.

Asked for FDOT-spec material and that's exactly what came off the truck. Driver had the ticket ready, weighed and clean.

What is Red Clay used for?

Natural red clay with iron oxide content for road subgrade, pond liners, infield mix, equestrian arenas, and earthen construction. Low permeability, compacts dense.

Road subgrade & subbase
Compacts dense to form a stable subgrade beneath driveways, rural roads, and pads. Low permeability resists water intrusion in Florida's high water table.
Pond liners & water features
Form natural clay liners for retention ponds, ag ponds, and water features. Compacted clay holds water without plastic or membrane liners.
Equestrian arenas & paddocks
Provides the dense, compactable base layer for horse arenas, riding rings, and high-traffic paddocks. Top with sand or screenings for finished footing.
Baseball infield amendment
Mix into infield surfaces to add the iron-oxide red color and improve compaction characteristics. Often used alongside baseball clay for the playing surface.
Erosion-resistant landscape grading
Use as a structural fill in landscape contouring and earthworks where you need both compaction and low permeability — terraces, swales, berm cores.
Decorative red-toned landscape
Use in xeriscape and decorative landscape applications where the natural red iron-oxide color is desired. Caps well with mulch or rock to maintain color.
Not ideal for these applications:
  • Not ideal for plant-growth applications (impermeable)
  • Not ideal for paver bases (use stone dust)
  • Not ideal for free-draining fill
  • Not ideal for areas requiring rapid infiltration

Got a text when the truck left and another when it was 15 minutes out. That alone is worth switching from my old supplier.

Frequently asked questions

Red clay is a naturally occurring clay soil colored by iron oxide content (typically 5–15%). It compacts to a dense, low-permeability surface and is used as road subgrade, pond liner, equestrian arena base, infield-mix component, and earthen-construction fill. The same material is sometimes called roadbase clay, ferric clay, or red dirt.
