When compacted, the binder activates under heat and traffic to create a semi-hard, asphalt-like surface.

Asphalt millings cost less than gravel and perform better on driveways because the bitumen binder causes them to harden over time under heat and traffic — creating a semi-solid surface that resists rutting. Gravel stays loose and migrates. For long driveways and parking areas, millings are typically the better long-term value.
