Playground surfacing depth is set by the equipment fall height, not the project size. Use this calculator to size engineered wood fiber (EWF) mulch or play sand to ASTM F1292 specs.
How to use this playground surface calculator
- 1
Measure the play area
The full surfacing footprint, including the 6-foot safety zone around equipment.
- 2
Look up the fall height
The fall height is the highest point a child can climb to. Equipment manuals list it. 4 ft = 6" of EWF. 5 ft = 9" of EWF. 7 ft = 12" of EWF.
- 3
Pick the surface
EWF is the most common loose-fill — clean, compactable, ADA-accessible. Play sand is cheaper but less accessible.
- 4

How the math works
Volume in cubic yards equals Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27. For a 20 ft × 20 ft play area at 9 inches of EWF: 400 × 0.75 ÷ 27 = 11 cubic yards.
EWF compresses 25% under traffic in the first month. Order the loose-installed depth and top off after the first month — the calculator buffer accounts for this.
ASTM F1292 sets the minimum depth-to-fall-height ratio for compliant playgrounds. Falling short of the spec is the single most common cause of injury in residential play areas.
How much does playground surface cover?
Quick reference for how much area one ton and one cubic yard cover at common depths.
| Depth | 1 ton covers | 1 cubic yard covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1" | — sold by yard — | 324 sq ft |
| 2" | — sold by yard — | 162 sq ft |
| 3" | — sold by yard — | 108 sq ft |
| 4" | — sold by yard — | 81 sq ft |
| 6" | — sold by yard — | 54 sq ft |
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. Coverage values shown are for loose mulch — expect 10–15% settling in the first month.
Typical quantities by project
| Project | Depth | Area | Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backyard set 12 ft × 12 ft × 5 ft fall | 9" | 144 sq ft | ~4 cubic yards EWF |
| Swing set 20 ft × 20 ft × 7 ft fall | 12" | 400 sq ft | ~15 cubic yards EWF |
| Daycare play area 30 ft × 40 ft | 9" | 1,200 sq ft | ~33 cubic yards EWF |
| Sandbox 10 ft × 10 ft | 12" | 100 sq ft | ~3.7 cubic yards play sand |
| Climbing dome 15 ft × 15 ft × 6 ft fall | 9" | 225 sq ft | ~6.3 cubic yards EWF |
Common ordering mistakes
From real deliveries, these are the mistakes we see most often. Avoiding any one of them saves a callback order.
Surface too thin
A 2-inch sprinkle of mulch is decorative, not protective. 6 inches minimum for any equipment. 9–12 inches for taller structures.
Wrong material
Landscape mulch is not the same as playground EWF. EWF is engineered for impact attenuation. Substituting cheap mulch is not safe.
No edging
Without an 8-inch edge restraint the loose fill migrates out of the play zone and the depth drops below spec within months.
Forgetting drainage
EWF on top of compacted soil holds water. Lay a 4-inch crushed stone drainage base below the EWF, especially in Florida.
Skipping the top-off
EWF and sand compact 25% in the first 90 days. Plan a top-off at the 60-day mark and annually after.
